Tank Industries’ 200 Years of Experience with TE Connectivity’s Raychem Products

Over the past 38 years,

TE Connectivity’s Raychem brand, which manufactures a range of reliable heat shrink and moulded cable accessories, has touched the lives of three of Tank Industries’ employees. - Dr Alan Nelson, former Quality Assurance Manager and GMR-2 Engineer; Jennifer Cooper, Key Account Manager; and Clive Maasch, General Manager.

 Leading local change

Alan first encountered the brand when he was appointed as Managing Director of Raychem South Africa, a subsidiary of Raychem Limited UK. During his time with the company, he helped to boost the local manufacture of products by establishing an electronics harnessing division and increasing local content within the electrical cable accessories segment. After 20 years, he left the cabling and heat shrink world for a brief stint in vehicle tracking before retiring in 1996.

Three years later, Alan was enticed out of retirement to help lead Tank in becoming ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 compliant. He was also instrumental in Tank’s accreditation as an EW-SETA Electrical Training Academy.

Full circle after 40 years

Jennifer’s career also saw her starting out with Raychem South Africa and later working with the brand again while at Tank Industries. She initially joined Raychem back in 1983 as part of the internal sales team and in 1987 was promoted to Sales Manager. Although the brand was acquired by several companies in the years that followed, she remained loyal throughout all the different transitions until 1998 when she moved to another organisation within the cabling space. Some 24 years later, she joined Tank Industries where she works closely with TE Connectivity’s Raychem brand once more.

Big moves for the brand

In a twist of fate, Clive actually applied for a job with Raychem South Africa in 1987. None other than Jennifer and Alan interviewed him. Although he was unsuccessful and went on to be employed as a Sales Executive for a competitor, he finally got the opportunity to work with the brand after becoming part of the Tank Industries Team as General Manager in 2010. In fact, he was responsible for bringing its products into the Reunert group of companies, of which Tank Industries is a part. “Bringing TE Connectivity’s Raychem brand into the group has been one of the highlights of my whole career,” says Clive.

Looking to the future, he hopes to solidify the TE Connectivity Raychem brand’s reputation as the premier cable accessory in South Africa. “The brand has the most advanced and the most reliable products – just what is needed for putting in new electrical infrastructure and maintaining it for the long term, which is crucial in conquering South Africa’s energy crisis.”
