Tank Industries’ Training: Mastering low and medium voltage cable jointing and termination

Behind every switch, light, and appliance lies a complex network of cables, many of them medium and low voltage, carrying hefty loads across vast distances. Yet, the strength of this network hinges on its weakest link – the quality of cable jointing and termination.

However, while formal trade tests are mandatory for house wiring installations, the same is not required for low and medium voltage jointing and termination. This oversight has led to an alarming increase in the number of failures in cable joints and terminations due to improper installation.

In this blog, we delve into why proper jointing and termination are essential and how Tank Industries is leading the charge in bridging this knowledge gap.

With a commitment to enhancing the skills and knowledge of both our personnel and customers, we established a cutting-edge training academy where comprehensive instruction in low and medium voltage cable jointing and termination methods is provided by experts in their fields. Participants are not only equipped with theoretical knowledge but practical skills too.

Our curriculum:

  • Is rooted in the recognised standards of SANS 10198 (particularly Parts 9, 10 and 11), which deals with the selection, handling and installation of electric power cables of rating not exceeding 33 kV.

  • Delivers on the education and training outcomes laid out in the South African Qualifications Authority’s Unit Standard ID 259187 to ensure that graduates will be capable of planning, installing, terminating and connecting medium voltage cables according to manufacturer`s specifications.

  • Caters to varying levels of expertise, from those with a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 2 to level 4.

  • Is provided over a three-day period either at the customer's site or at our training facility in Cape Town or Gauteng.

  • Is accredited by the Energy Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA)

Setting the industry standard

At Tank, we take quality control seriously, so the assessment and moderation of our training are conducted by experienced professionals who ensure that every graduate has a robust understanding of cable jointing and termination. To further assure the integrity of the training outcomes, external moderation is carried out by EWSETA. Our training has yielded impressive results over the past few years, with the course now being considered a prerequisite for contractors working on national and municipal networks.

On completion of the course, participants gain credits which are recognised by the NQF and can be accumulated towards a qualification. They also receive an EWSETA-accredited certificate of competency that is registered with the Department of Labour. This serves as tangible recognition of the skills and knowledge gained, backed by Tank's longstanding experience and dedication to excellence.

In a world heavily reliant on electricity, the integrity of power distribution networks is paramount. Our commitment to elevating cable jointing and termination skills is a step toward a more reliable and efficient power network. Our training academy not only equips individuals with the necessary skills but also empowers them to become industry leaders.
